Cheers

I just read the most amazing article written by Caitlin Moscatello in the National Post. It is about how drinking can help my career. Better yet, drinking can help me earn more $$$$$. According to Mostcatello a study published in the Journal of Labor Research found that “men who drink earn 10% more than those who don’t, and women who drink earn 14% more than those who abstain.”

Woo hoo! This is great news for a woman ‘drinker’ trying to transition her career into a field that is built on networking. PR is THE social career because it deals with reputation management and on keeping our clients popular. However, we already knew this information but it’s nice that the rest of the industries are coming on board (and out for drinks).

Now this doesn’t mean that we should start doing keg stands and playing quarters with our boss. Instead, what the article is trying to say that in most professions your ability to socialize and fit can be just as important as your ability to do your job.

On that note, who wants to go out for a pint?

A rose is just a rose…

Waterloo-based Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM) is getting sued over patent issues again. What? Oh no I go that wrong…I meant to say that RIM is suing another company over patent issues. I guess Samsung has released a smart phone in the US with the name BlackJack and RIM is getting antsy claiming that the name is too close to their already popular BlackBerry.

Personally, I think it’s a great idea. I have a sneaking suspicion that they are really trying to prove a point about the over-protective, outdated and stagnant patent laws in the United States. There is a lot of money wasted on legal matter in cases such as this, and the courts generally side with the patent holders. This wouldn’t be a problem if patents weren’t given out for every tiny little thing. Did you know that there is a patent for 3-legged pantyhose?

I think I am going to patent my name. I like it a lot, and the rising popularity of it is not something I am accustomed to. I loved growing up and being the only Zoë in a class with 5 Jennifers (no offence to anyone named Jen). Alas, I digress.

Maybe RIM is just trying to make back some of the $612.5-million (U.S.) that they paid in a similar settlement back in March.

Or maybe they have learned a valuable lesson: That in the US you can sue, and win, over just about anything.

Telemarketers: Good, bad or ugly?

I have been getting these strange phone calls for the past month; they show up as unknown name and number and as soon as I answer they hang up. Each call only strengthened my need to berate The Voice on the other end. Lucky for me they finally got through and when I was ready to freak out I realized what the ruckus was about: it was *gasp* a telemarketer.

The calls were coming from a survey company calling recent Niagara College grads to get an update on their work status. In the end I actually wanted to take this call but I really was busy so I sincerely asked The Voice to call me back the next day at 10 am when I knew I would be free. The Voice obliged and I went back to my dinner. Needless to say, I didn’t get a call at 10am. I instead I got a call at 5:30 again. This time I didn’t answer. (more…)
