My niece’s poem in the paper!

Kelsey's Icy World Poem

My niece, Kelsey, got her poem was published in the Pulse section of The Hamilton Spectator. Hard to imagine she is only in grade 5. Even she is smart enough to know about Hybrids!

Reading her poem reminds me of why kids’ writing can be so sophisticated - they don’t hide from the truth and they keep things simple. A notion us ‘adults’ could stand to incorporate a little more often.

Great work Kelsey; perhaps you should think about starting your own blog!

Tide gets dirty with social media.

Tide is hosting a contest for their Tide to Go pens at mystainistalking.com. I was curious to visit after seeing a mildly clever commercial during the Super Bowl.

You enter the contest by being the director of your own parody commercial. Miss the commercial during the Super Bowl? No worries, you can view it on the site. You can also view the entries from motivated participants. Of course, it’s all housed in a You tube channel.

I also stumbled on Tide’s website which has a section that actually encourages users to share their stories about how Tide to Go has saved the day. Yes, this it is exactly what you think it is - People write about using their Tide to Go pens. Exhilarating.

It mimics a blog format and you can actually comment on their posts. All this AND You Tube? It must be social media.
I read a couple and felt compelled to comment on them here:

  • Grandma’s Bloody Nose - A touching story about how they cleaned Granny’s blazer in time for wedding pictures. I’m more interested in how Granny got the bloody nose in the first place!
  • Honest Answer - I started to think that Tide was ghostwriting these stories because I couldn’t honestly believe there were that many people interested in telling a Tide to Go story. Not here…this user keeps it short and sweet. And honest.

These “blog posts” got me thinking - What kind of presence does Tide to Go have among the Blogosphere? I poke fun at their attempt of incorporating social media into their ad campaign but perhaps there is purpose for housing an online conversation about Tide to Go.

I did a simple Google Blog search and what a surprise!

The exact commercial I am writing about makes it into this blog, which writes about Super Bowl ads, and this one, which is about Super Bowl ads….and this one, which is about (you guessed it) Super Bowl ads. I could go on…but I won’t.

Is this a conversation worth having online? I guess it depends on how much you love your Tide to Go pen.

My Flickr pics used in a story.

CN TowerI just recently started using Flickr and I love it. I know nothing about photography but I love taking and posting pictures.

What I love even more is the community I have become a part of. I should actually say “communities” since there are a vast number of groups and specific niches. (Did you know I’m in a group called “Look Up“? It’s of pictures of people looking up)

I also love it when other users comment or tag my photos. To me it means that I saw sparked an emotion strong enough for someone to comment. Usually it’s the same emotion that sparked me to take the picture in the first place.

My most recent example was a request from Ryan Nadel, a fellow Flickr user and writer for NowPublic.com. Below is an excerpt taken from the site about what they do:

“NowPublic is a participatory news network which mobilizes an army of reporters to cover the events that define our world….By harnessing the wisdom of crowds and tapping into the news creating potential of the hundreds of millions of Internet users, bloggers and photography enthusiasts, NowPublic is changing the way news is made and distributed.”

It’s a social media news site! How cool! And my pictures, from Flickr, are being used in an article! Click here for the full story and to check out my pics.
