It’s been a little over a month now that I’ve been without it and I thought you should know. I’m pretty proud of myself for getting rid of it, after having one (and no land line) for over 5 years.

I only used the damned thing for texting anyway. I hate the phone. I am usually up and about, doing something, usually that requires my hands and attention (both of which get tied up when using a phone).

I was always the one known for not answering. When I did, I was usually greeted with, “Oh! I was expecting the machine.” It may sound annoying but, like I said, I am usually up and about and that means I’m in a situation where talking on the phone would be inappropriate. You know, like at dinner, or with someone else, or standing in line. Nothing drives me more bonkers than when I call someone and they say “Can you hold on a sec?” and then I hear them order fries or a coffee. Seriously, can’t you just call me back later? It’s ten times worse when you are in the middle of a conversation. It’s so obviously rude but so many people do it.

Anyway, the reason I write about ditching the mobile after such a long time is that while at a conference I realized how much I love not having one. I like not being 100% accessible. It gives me control over my life. I remember diverting my attention from the stage to see a bunch of heads down, playing with their BlackBerrries (cell phones on speed). Not fun.
I will admit, there have been times where a cell phone would have come in handy. I just remind myself that i got along fine without one before so who cares if I can’t call hubby to tell him I’ll be late?
