Free Cookies from New Moon Kitchen

I love getting blogger outreached. I don’t know why, it’s not just the opportunity to do cool stuff but I love learning about how other people do it. I mean, it’s my job, and I get first hand experience from the other end. I suppose it’s the same as being a waitress and getting waited on. Or being a musician and listening to music. You see all the nuances and different techniques.

Anyway, this particular email wasn’t completely out of the blue. I have tried New Moon Kitchen products before. Specifically, the Nana bread.

Not only are all the food made with whole, natural ingredients, but they have no preservatives, they’re vegan friendly, a bunch of other healthy stuff and, as my tweet so eloquently reads, they are also MADE WITH LOVE.

aside: Don’t get your panties in a bunch that we’re talking fat free crap, here. No, the food that says shit like that is chocked full of chemicals and fake flavours. This is not diet food but it’s still better for you than anything that says it’s “diet”.

Anyway, the most important part is that the taste is sensational.

I’m telling you, I know my baked goods and I’m critical. My mom is one of the best bakers in the world and she always made things from scratch. That’s what this tastes like.

Okay, back to the email. She is a friend of a co-worker of mine and I’m certain he suggested me to her and voila, I get this email asking me to blog about her cookies and she’ll send me a pack to try.

Uh? Hello? I was already going to blog about the bread. So, yes, I will definitely review the cookies.

She connected to me through someone I know. Check.
She wrote an honest, friendly and personal email. Check.
She didn’t pretend to be a ‘long time’ reader of my blog. Check.
And there are no obligations as to what I have to write. Check.

Oh….and I get free cookies that are probably going to be delicious! Check!

  • I especially like your third point: "She didn't pretend to be a 'long time' reader of my blog."

We're often taught/told to become part of the community before approaching a blogger. And don't get me wrong, I completely agree with that. But this PR girl clearly wasn't -- and that's okay! She saw the opportunity and jumped on it. What was she gonna do? Leave a few comments before asking if you wanted a free pack of cookies? Your post would already be written by then and no relationship would have been formed!
  • You make a great point Rayanne. We rarely work in ideal situations and often there are parts of the process that need to be skipped. That just makes it all the more difficult to be taken seriously.

I also want to point out (and probably should have mentioned it in my post) that this wasn't a just a PR person. Toni, from what I understand, helps to run all aspects of the business....even the baking! it explains why her email was so personal :)

  • Panties in a twist....bahaha. What if I like mine in a twist, huh??

    Kidding.

Sounds good..I've sort of sworn off sugar. Lost 20 pounds though so far..take a big sniff of them for me when you get 'em. :)
  • but...these cookies are made with love!

congrats on the weight loss; I s'pose you'll have to live vicariously through my review on them. :)
  • I hope they sent enough for you to share with the whole group because it would not be fair of you to horde them all if they did... Can't wait to hear what you think of them, but my interest is piqued looks like the closest outlet to me is in Welland, maybe next week.
  • i have been sharing. thanks for pointing it out ;)

  • Lucky you! I love getting outreach from people who get it too and I LOVE cookies. My co-worker told me about New Moon Kitchen months ago because the owner and I share a name and a passion for cookies too.

As for Rayanne's comment, I agree it's best if you already have a relationship with a blogger before reaching out to her but that doesn't always happen. Next best thing is finding a blogger who you may have some connection with and who is a good fit, while not pretending to be their best friend or biggest fan. We all know that's a big fat lie. Honest and sincerity go a long way.

Zoe, just curious, did the email come from an agency or someone from New Moon Kitchen?

I can't wait to read your review.
  • It came from someone at New Moon Kitchen. As far as I understand she not only helps to run the business side of things but she also bakes too!!!

and the review will probably be the 'watching' kind ;)
  • The watching kind? You mean you won't even have a taste?
  • cute. i think i mean more like you will have to watch.

there is no way i couldn't eat those cookies!
  • Funny 'cause I always think of you as the video ninja. Sounds like those cookies were making the rounds at the office today too!
  • From one blogger to another, I have some bad news.

What New Moon Kitchen does not tell you (or even bother to put on their ingredient list) is that the chocolate chips in HALF of their cookies contain REFINED WHITE SUGAR and SYNTHETIC VANILLIN.

"Whole, natural ingredients"? No, not when you take into account that fully half of their cookies contain sugar and chemical vanillin.

Not quite the "totally natural" product a vegan wants, now, is it?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
  • don't you worry; I haven't been living under a rock. I've been following what's going on.

And what do I see? I see that you pointed out an error that New Moon kitchen did not purposefully hide. Then they fixed it.

That's what a good company should do.

What did you do? You acted like a five year old, throwing a temper tantrum. And you still are.

What are you doing now? Visiting every person that writes about New Moon and telling them YOUR (not-so-objective) side of the story.

Do you really have that much time on your hands?

I could understand a little, if they were this big, successful corporation with the time, money and professional resources to make things perfect...or if they knew of their error and still hid it.

But that's not the case. They are a very small business sincerely trying to make a healthy product for us to buy.

And you, the righteous vegan is flaming them? Yeah, nice to know what kind of person you are.

And don't ever compare yourself as a blogger to me. I have ethics. I don't heavily moderate my comments the way you do to only show one side of the story. I don't spend my time trying to insult and flame hard-working individuals like Eden and the team at New Moon.

What do you want to hear so that you will shut up? That you're right? Well, they already said that...they already found new chocolate chips that meet your standards.

So why aren't you shutting up?

I hope you calm down and realize how silly you look. Perhaps you should also take up another profession because you don't seem to get the blogging thing.

Oh, and don't visit my blog again. People like you are not welcome in my home.
